Step 1: Laying the foundation
Start by painting your pencil box thoroughly with white craft paint. This primer will ensure that the colours for marbling stand out beautifully later on. Allow the paint to dry well so that the colours for marbling adhere evenly. Once the paint has dried, use fine sandpaper to remove any protruding wood fibres. This will give you a smooth surface for marbling.
Step 2: Preparing the work area
Before you start the creative process, protect your workspace with a handicraft mat. This will protect your table from paint splashes and water stains. For marbling, choose an old container, such as a bucket that is no longer needed or a bowl that is large and deep enough to fully immerse the pencil box. Remember that the paint residue will be difficult to remove later, so use a container that you no longer need for other purposes. Also protect your hands with disposable gloves, as colours for marbling are difficult to wash off.
Step 3: The marbling begins
Fill the selected container with cold tap water. Shake the colours for marbling thoroughly to distribute the colour pigments evenly. Then add a few drops of the desired colours to the surface of the water. The colours float on the water and do not mix by themselves, which provides an ideal basis for creative patterns.
Step 4: Creating patterns and dipping
Now use a bamboo skewer to gently draw patterns in the floating colours. Let your imagination run wild, but be careful not to use too many colours to achieve a harmonious end result. Then carefully dip one side of the pencil box into the colourful pattern on the surface of the water. Then place the box on a handicraft mat so that the colour can dry. You can carefully remove any excess colour in the container with a piece of paper wherever it has collected.
Step 5: Finish the other sides
Once the first side is dry, repeat the marbling process for the other sides of your pencil box. Make sure to let each side dry thoroughly before dipping the box in water again.
