The legend of Saint Martin

This legend goes back to the soldier Martin of Tours who lived in the fourth century. He charitably helped a beggar in the cold season by cutting his cloak in two with a sword and giving one half to the beggar. Afterwards, following an apparition of Jesus Christ, he became a very pious man and later even became a bishop. After his death, on 11 November, Martin was canonised by the Pope because of his good deeds and has since been known as Saint Martin, the patron saint of beggars and soldiers.

Lanterns provide light in the dark season and in Christian symbolism light stands for good. The bright, colourful lanterns at the St. Martin's procession are an expression of St. Martin's "shining message" and, just like back then, are meant to bring light into the November darkness.
