Instructions No. 3380
Difficulty: Beginner
Working time: 3 Hours
1. Prepare the Weaving Piece
Start by placing the two metal rods into the loom to determine the desired width of your weaving piece. The rods ensure that the weaving piece maintains even edges and does not shrink. Then, attach the warp yarn at the left bottom of the frame by tying it securely. Stretch the yarn in rows along the grooves of the frame, until you reach the right bottom corner, and tie it there as well.
Now you can start weaving or add additional fringes to the warp threads. To do this, cut strands of yarn and knot them onto each warp thread band in the frame.
2. Weave Row by Row
To start, cut a longer thread from a ball of wool and wrap it around the shuttle, a small wooden stick that serves as a weaving aid. Tie the thread to the first row of the warp yarn and weave with the shuttle alternately under and over the threads. At the end of each row, wrap the wool around the outer metal rod. Weave in the opposite direction in the next row. Use a comb to press the wool tightly for an even pattern.
If you are satisfied with your rows and want to change colors, end the thread on the left side of the frame and leave about 10 cm of thread to sew later.
A great effect can be achieved after several color changes by knotting threads into the warp yarn rows, similar to the bottom of the weaving piece. Count the rows and start in the middle, adding an extra knot to the left and right of the previous row in each weaving row. Once the tapestry reaches the desired length, trim the fringes to shape with scissors.
4. Saw, Sew, Hang
Now, cut the dowel to the correct length and remove the tapestry from the loom. Saw the dowel slightly wider than the frame with a coping saw. Push all the wool rows together with the comb again to use the warp yarn at the top as loops.
Sew all the wool threads at the back of the tapestry with a sewing needle. Then thread the loops over the wooden dowel, tie a thread to the dowel, and hang your masterpiece.
